Slot Machines – Method to the Madness?

Planning your trip to a casino either land based or online is important. Just heading in and getting caught up in the excitement can be disastrous for your bankroll. I always like to follow certain rules and procedures before I slide the first coin into the slot.

I always go with a pre-determined amount of money. I make a firm pack with myself to only spend that money. If I have doubled my money or it is gone my time there is over. This is always easier said than done but it is something that needs to be done to allow for continued fun with no regrets.

Slot machines are set up to do one thing – take your money. They are operated by a computer chip called a Random Number Generator. This chip determines the symbol combinations for each spin. These chips are programmed to give out a certain percentage back to the player. They will normally pay out more on online slot machines versus casinos in areas such as Las Vegas, although Vegas is known for the loosest slots in the world. The reason is simple. Online casinos do not have to pay much overhead such as rent in order to stay in business.

Another thing I always do is play the maximum coins, especially on the progressive slots. You will get the highest payout and this is the only way to win the jackpot on the progressives. If this means that I only play the quarter machines for an evening then that is how it has to be. It really all depends upon your bankroll. If you are not in the position to play the dollar slots then don’t do it.

The computer chips know how long they are being played. Some people believe that if you stick to the same machine your odds will get better. This is a myth and maybe I will e-mail Myth Busters to confirm this. Once a machine starts hitting every three to four spins it may be time to play another machine.

Stopping while you are ahead is the best way to consider yourself a winner. I try not to get caught in the “I’m going to win my money back” attitude. Know when to say when and go back and try another night. In fact, quitting when you have won will make you feel great and as if you have beat the system, which is what it is all about.

I think it is important to read the rules and the fine print of the slot machines. If you are looking for the loosest machines in a brick and mortar casino you may even have to ask some of the employees which ones have the greater payout percentage. These machines have to be found. Locals may not share this information with you because they want to keep them for themselves. I know I would.

There are tips and tricks to every casino game. Everyone has their own thoughts and methods of how to beat the odds. These are also changing all the time because as the casinos learn that we know how to beat the machines they change the game, which means we need to change ours.

Too often people go into casinos with visions of winning big but if they strategically plan their trip they may have a better shot… What doesn’t work should be changed up the next time they go.

Newbies never understand that the progressives never pay the highest jackpot unless the maximum bet is placed.

I learned this lesson the hard way. I hit the jackpot but did not win it because I did not bet the max. Lesson learned I guess, but that night will be forever burned in my memory.

I always see people staying on one machine all night long, it seems to work for them….. I guess the jury will remain out on that one. :)

slot lurkers are everywhere, waiting for you to leave a cold machine so they can hop on and win so I don’t know if leaving a machine would really do the trick

There is not going to be any way to tell if you will be successful or not. You simply are playing your luck and sometimes you will win and others you will lose and maybe lose big.

I would love to be a person who makes a living on slot machines, but I think this distinction is left up to the poker players….. too bad!
